Thank you to everyone who shared feedback on the draft Playspace Action Plan.

In late 2025, we asked the community how playgrounds across Byron Shire should be improved and how future investment should be prioritised.

On this page you'll find a summary of the feedback and how it shaped the updated plan.

The Final Playspace Action Plan was adopted by Council in early 2026.

How feedback informed the Plan

Byron Shire has 37 playgrounds. Most are small and mainly for younger kids.

The purpose of the Playspace Action Plan is to provide spaces that are more:

  • Fun
  • Inclusive
  • Bigger
  • Diverse.

To make sure the Plan and suggested upgrades match what you want, we asked for your feedback during November and December 2025.

  • Online Your Say survey - 101 responses
  • Pop‑ups at Byron and Bangalow Farmers Markets
  • Workshops with Bangalow Public School students
  • Emails to schools and community groups
  • On‑site park visits and data collection.

Big Picture

  • Support for better, more interesting playgrounds
  • Strong concern about losing small local parks

Different views by age

  • Young people prefer one big, exciting playground
  • Families value small parks close to home.

Local Parks Matter

Many people spoke strongly about the value of their local playgrounds.

Frequently mentioned parks included:

  • Apex Park (Byron Bay)
  • Jacaranda Drive & Sunrise Park
  • Leopardwood Crescent
  • Mackellar Court
  • Torakina / Excelsior Street (Brunswick Heads)

These spaces support community connection, wellbeing and everyday play.

Top priorities

How did the Plan change?

One of the key themes that came through feedback was the desire to reduce the scale of upgrades to allow some smaller, more local playspaces to remain. A summary of other changes is provided below.
  • Byron Foreshore and Dening Park to become a District Park as part of a combined precinct of play – currently earmarked as two Neighbourhood size parks.
  • Reduce the size of proposed upgrade at Apex Park, Mullumbimby from District to Neighbourhood.
  • Reduce the size of proposed upgrade at Railway Park, Byron Bay from Neighbourhood to retain in current form.
  • Add Mackellar Court Park as a renewal to local park in the action plan.

The original Action Plan identified five small local playspaces that would be removed over time:

  • Pepperbush Court, Suffolk Park
  • Bunya Court, Suffolk Park
  • Gordon Street, Byron Bay
  • Evans Court, Byron Bay
  • Leopard Wood Crescent, Bangalow.

As a result of feedback, we have amended the Plan as follows:

  • Remove Pepperbush Park, Suffolk Park at end of life, due to distance to nearby Linda Vidler.
  • Remove Bunya Court, Suffolk Park with potential for dog off lead area. Offset shade required at Linda Vidler to compensate for removal of shaded playspace.
  • More consultation on Leopardwood Crescent and Parrot Tree Park in Bangalow with the community as facility reaches end of life.
  • Retain Gordon Street, Byron Bay.
  • Retain Evans Court, Byron Bay.
  • Prioritise shade structures and tree planting at high-use sites such as Heritage Park, Mullumbimby and Jacaranda Park.
  • Add toilets/amenities where repeatedly requested (Jacaranda and Heritage Park).
  • Provide additional fenced playgrounds near busy roads (Dening Park)
  • Increase swings and slides; include flying fox/zipline where feasible.

There will be more community consultation as individual parks age and near their end of life.

The timing of the upgrades depends upon safety and condition of the equipment and availability of funding.

Consultation on the shared precinct of play at Apex Park and Dening Park, Byron Bay will be open for your feedback in mid 2026.
