Byron Shire has 37 playgrounds. Most are small and mainly for younger kids.
The Playspace Action Plan addresses community feedback collected over the years, which asks for playspaces that are more:
- Fun
- Inclusive
- Bigger
- Diverse.
To make sure the Plan and suggested upgrades match what you want, we asked for your feedback during November and December.
Feedback has now closed. A report of the outcomes will go to Council early in 2026.
What ideas does the Playspace Action Plan propose?
Some of the proposed changes in the Playspace Action Plan.
This plan recommends increasing the size and distribution by establishing several District and Neighbourhood playspaces throughout the towns.
This offers play and social recreational opportunities for children of all ages, teenagers and young adults.
The Plan proposes to improve and increase the size of the following playspaces:
- Bangalow Sports Ground - Renew & improve to Local
- Piccabeen Park, Bangalow - Improve to a Neighbourhood
- Apex Park, Mullumbimby - Renew & improve to a District
- Apex Park, Main Beach Byron Bay - Renew & improve to Neighbourhood
- Denning Park, Byron Bay - Improve to Neighbourhood
- Railway Park - Improve to Neighbourhood.
- South Golden Beach Park - Renew & improve to Neighbourhood
- Linda Vidler Park - Renew & improve to District
New spaces could include exciting features like:
- Climbing structures
- Parkour zones
- Social areas for teens and young adults.
Small Local and Local facilities within 400 to 800 metres of a District or Neighbourhood space may be scaled back or removed once they reach the end of their life.
Funds could then be used to improve larger District and Neighbourhood spaces.
Combining resources can help to expand play experiences for a wider age range.
The Plan identifies 5 small local playspaces that would be removed over time:
- Pepperbush Court, Suffolk Park
- Bunya Court, Suffolk Park
- Gordon Street, Byron Bay
- Evans Court, Byron Bay
- Leopard Wood Crescent, Bangalow.
This would depend on funding for upgrades to other facilities.
Piccabeen Park, Bangalow: Increase from Local to Neighbourhood Playspace over the long term.
Apex Park, Mullumbimby: Increase from Neighbourhood to District over the medium term.
Evans Court, Byron Bay: One of the playspaces proposed to be removed over the long term when it comes to the end of it's life.
Denning Park, Byron Bay: Along with Apex Park Byron Bay, increase from Local to Neighbourhood Playspaces.
Leopard Wood Crescent Park, Bangalow: Remove when it comes to the end of its life. Replace with the new facilities at Parrot Tree Place Park.
Tom Kendall Park, New Brighton: Upgrade from Local to Neighbourhood level. Offer a larger playspace with varied physical & social play experiences.
